Privacy notice
This explains what The Haddenham Herald does with anything you send us. Reading the site needs nothing from you and sets no cookies: we count page views anonymously, with no way to tell who you are.
Who we are
The Haddenham Herald is a satirical newspaper for Haddenham, Buckinghamshire, run by The Haddenham Herald. For anything about your data, contact the address on our Contact page.
What we collect, and why
- Lonely Hearts. Your advert, your name and your email. We use them to read your advert, publish it as you wrote it (trimmed only if it is too long), tell you your reference number when it runs, and pass on replies. You must be 18 or over. Your name and email are never published.
- Classifieds. Your ad, its category and your email, to publish the ad, give you a Box No. and pass on replies.
- Letters. Your letter and the sign-off you choose, which we publish as you wrote it. We do not need an email address.
- Heard in Haddenham, Ask Philippe and story tips. What you write, and your name if you choose to give one. We never publish a name without asking. For Ask Philippe we take names out before anything runs.
- Replying to an advert. Your message, your email and, if you tick it, permission to quote your message in the paper without your name.
- Photos (story tips only). Any photo you attach. It is resized in your browser before it is sent.
- Stopping abuse. A scrambled version of your internet address, so one person cannot send us hundreds of forms. It cannot be turned back into your address and is deleted after 2 days.
Our legal basis is your consent, which you give by ticking the box on each form. You can withdraw it at any time.
Replies to adverts, and what we do not tell you
Some adverts are written by the Herald and some come from real readers, and we do not say which. If a real person placed the advert, your message is emailed to them and the two of you can talk through us: we never show either of you the other's email address, and we do not keep the text of what is said. What you choose to write in a message, such as a signature or your own number, is up to you. Either of you can end the conversation or report a message from the email itself. If the advert is one we wrote, your message is only counted as a reader response: we do not keep your email address, and we delete the message after 30 days unless you ticked that we may quote it.
Who else sees it
- The editor, who reads everything before it is used.
- Cloudflare hosts the site and the database and delivers our email. Our email goes out only from a dedicated address (mail.haddenham.news).
- Anthropic: everything you write is sent to Anthropic's AI service to check it for anything defamatory, abusive or harmful before an editor reads it, and, for Ask Philippe only, to write Philippe's answer. Your name and email are not sent. A person always makes the decision to publish.
We do not sell or share your details for marketing, and we do not use them to send anything but what is described here.
How long we keep it
- A submission nobody has dealt with: 90 days. One we turn down: 7 days.
- A submission we accept but have not yet run: 60 days.
- Your name, email and original text once your advert has run: 365 days from the day it went live, so replies can still reach you. What we published stays published.
- A reply conversation: 60 days after its last message.
- Records of the emails we sent, without their contents: 90 days.
If you ask us to remove your advert, we delete it and your details straight away.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, and you can object to how we use it. Contact the address on our Contact page. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
These forms are for adults. Do not use them to report anything involving a child or a safeguarding concern: contact Buckinghamshire Council or the police directly.
